MALAYSIA

WHEN: May 2019
WHERE: Kuala Lumpar

*We stayed at my friends uncles house so I have no recommendations of where to stay - sorry!

What to see/do

         #1. Batu Caves

- huge Indian influence

- wear running shoes and a sarong

- respect those who are praying

- its super colourful

- around 300 or so steps up

- do no wear loose items that the monkeys can steal (they'll take sunglasses and hats)

- most food places near by are Indian food

- toilets (aka a hole) aren't clean here

#2. Petronas Towers/KLCC Park

- these towers look so much cooler in person then they doo in pictures

- if you look down on them they shape out a Islam star
- exceptional beautiful architecture

- the park is beautiful with the pool and fountains

- inside the towers is a shopping mall

        #3. Heli pad Bar

- this was a really cool experience, although there are many rooftop bars - this was the best
- drinks are same price as home

- you get a 360 view of the city

- its ALL tourists though

- very limited food options

- basically its an old inactive helipad that they've turned into a bar (they say its active during the day but after speaking to locals - it is not!)
- great way to see the city

What/Where to eat

I don't remember a lot of the names of the typical local food but the main influence in food their is Indian and Chinese. Definitely try coconut milk ice cream and their local fresh fruits. I didn't eat a single normal meal while in Malaysia as we were living with locals and honestly the food was delicious (and I'm picky!). If you're adventurous with food check out the Alor Street Night Food Market. They have EVERYTHING. Its amazing to see even if you aren't eating. It is very crowded though.

When We Went

We only went for 3 nights and only had one full day. This honestly was plenty of time for me. We could have had more time to visit more oMalaysia as a country but one full day in KL was enough to see everything that we wanted to see and do! We went in beginning of May. Weather was perfect. Hot and sunny and very humid with no rain. As for crowds - I think they were perfect. Not too busy but also not dead.

  • if you're picky with food - its hard to get normal food

  • they do not have normal toilets - its al holes (even the airport has holes)

  • go early to Batu caves to avoid crowds and the heat

  • wear a hat and sunscreen the sun is hot

  • its a very green country - don't walk in spots that are blocked off - respect their land

  • do NOT take a taxi - they will over charge or trick you and lock you in

  • download grab (their version of uber)

  • pack fancy shoes (they don't allow flip fops in most bars - non tourist anyways)

  • bring a sarong to cover up

General tips/Tricks

final thoughts

There is a lot of cultural influences here! Its just a quick side trip to visit my friends family so I have no real opinion on the country as whole. What I can say is that it is a LOT prettier then I was expecting - its a very very green country.
Would I recommend going?
Not unless you were already over there - I wouldn't go over solely for Malaysia
Would I go back?
Not likely no!

Total Cost: Around $250 per person

(We only did this as a side trip and my friends uncle paid for everything - all we paid for was the roundtrip from from Bali)
