the NETHERLANDS

WHEN: April 2018

WHERE: Amsterdam

I stayed with friends and in a hotel close the the airport - I don't remember the hotels name but it was in a good location and was the cheapest we could find last minute

What to see/do

      1. Red Light District

- during the day vs at night is completely different

- be cautious and aware of yourself at night

- coffee shop = weed

- you will see prostitutes in the windows (not all are nude though)

- take a canal tour

- rent a bike

        2. Heineken Tour

- easy to get drunk

- can't remember the cost but it was well worth the money for the amount of free drinks you get

- fun entertainment & activities

- very interesting
- something you just have to do if you're in Amsterdam

      3. Windmills/Tulips

- i'm sure there tours that you could take a tour but i had a friend who toured me and showed me around the countryside to see windmills, tulips and beaches

- i wouldn't suggest renting a car unless you're familiar with stick, opposite side of the road driving and Europes driving laws

- absolutely beautiful

What/Where to Eat

No restaurant recommendations but you have to try the following:

- Stroopwafel (dessert)
- Kroket (idk how to explain it but its so good)
- Patat
- Poffertjes (kinda like pancakes but better)
- Bittenball
- Kaas (I love cheese and ugghhhhhhh)
- raw fish (I didn't try this but its very typical)
- local beer and whiskey!

When we went

I went in April I believe - it was a really last minute trip. I went for 3 nights (just a weekend). This was plenty of time to see and do everything we wanted but I also had friends to drive me so everything was easily accessible. As per weather it was perfect. Not too hot, not too cold and no rain. As for crowds it wasn't crowded at all!

General Tips/Tricks

  • You don't need to be pothead or partier to go

  • the food is absolutely amazing

  • bring friends!

  • rent a bike - but be really careful - they're crazy there

  • do canal tours

  • explore outside of the city

  • go during blooming season

  • I wouldn't go for Amsterdam alone as you really only need a few days there

  • the canals are absolutely stunning and completely different way of life and seeing a city

final thoughts

This trip was so last minute and I felt it went really smoothly despite that! It was refreshing to get away for the weekend and enjoy good food, company and the beauty of the country
Would I recommend going?
Yea!
Would I go back?
Suppose to be going back in August actually

Total Cost:
Less then $500

(please note: I flew standby with my airline)
